When it comes to picking the right Oak Furniture for your house you need to ensure you look not only at the cost but the type of wood used. On the Internet there is always cheaper alternatives and the furniture industry is no different. The recommended type of oak furniture is “solid oak” this is as it sounds durable and quality.

Solid Oak Furniture can again fall into different price brackets so do shop around but don’t go for the cheapest. Ensure the company you buy one item from has all other pieces of furniture your looking for in the same range (even if you don’t require a sideboard currently to match the table you may in the future and you will need to buy matching).

Yesterday there was a bird in the office and it took me back to my childhood when we used to get birds that would fly down the chimney in my parent’s house and get stuck behind the gas fire. There would be an awful lot of struggling and banging behind the fire and I would cry until my Dad took off the fire from the wall and set the bird free. Once this happened, each time, the bird would go skitz and dart around the room, closely followed by the cat (the first two times this happened) who thought all his Christmases had come at once and this would undoubtedly result in the bird and cat knocking most of my dad’s antiques off the sideboard and the second time this happened the flat screen TV was knocked off the wall. After that anything that could be knocked over had to be packed away and the cat had to be locked in the kitchen. My Dad’s not dumb.

When I moved in with my last housemate we bought some furniture before we moved into the flat because it was an unfurnished flat. We invested in a lovely cream sofa with chunky sides and cushions which we bought second hand from an advert online. We got our Dads to help us pick it up in a big van and had it stored for two weeks before we moved in. On moving day we arrived and unpacked our stuff, however for some reason our Dads were taking a long time to bring the couch in from outside. It turns out that the doors were too narrow and it was impossible to get the couch in and also because it was rented, we couldn’t take the windows off to get it in. Moral of the story is take your measurements before you buy furniture and make sure you can get it in!

When choosing your furniture for a room, you really should think about the theme of the room you are creating. Think about this, if you had a new house and you were creating the theme from scratch you wouldn’t put mis matched furniture into each room, you’d pick a theme and go hunting for perfect items to stick to it. Therefore if it’s a pre existing room you should consider the current status of the room and choose new furniture to boost and update it rather than just buying something that will look really out of place. Unless you’re doing the room up new and then just go for a brand new theme!

In my house and in life in general I have always been very organised, with somewhere for everything I own to go so there is not stuff laying about the house. There has been an issue area that has plagued me however and that is my jewellery. I have a bowl for my rings, an egg cup for my earring studs, hang my necklaces on a coat hanger and hang my dangly earrings on the edge of my lamp in the bedroom. For my birthday last week, a friend gave me a decorative china cat with a long tail sticking up onto the air for my rings to go onto, and also a miniature coat stand which is designed to hold my necklaces and look good doing it! Genius!

You know you are meant to live together when you move in with someone you don’t know very well and it turns out you both own the same armchair! You’d expect when you first move into a shared home that there will be a miss match of styles as everyone brings their own belongings and you end up with a kooky student looking environment. My housemate and I both have large square armchairs big enough for two people, hers is in cream suede and mine is in brown leather with a cream suede cushion. They are exactly the same dimensions and look like they were bought from the same manufacturer! Fashion soul mates!

We are thinking about a remodel of the kitchen at the moment, and we’ve tended towards the “fitted” kitchen look – i.e. all the cupboards and units attached to the walls, with the appliances cunningly hid amongst/behind them.

Then we saw some lovely French-style kitchens, all with free-standing units made of beautiful wood with marble tops. And now we have to totally re-think the kitchen plan to accommodate this!

But how? How do we combine a modern, minimalist look with a rustic style?

We currently have no concrete idea on how to do this, but hope that with enthusiasm and a lot of online shopping, we will combine the two to get a great kitchen.

Decorating a bedroom often has to take into account 2 peoples very different options on what should, and should not, go into the room, from the bed itself, to the linen, to the wardrobes and drawers to the carpet and light fixtures. All of it different, and all of it suitable for different tastes and styles.

So decorating a spare room, where everyone you know could possibly have to sleep, can be even more stressful! To make it neutral enough to appease everyone, but interesting enough to make them want to stay over.

I’ve found that neutral colours work best, and then add your personal touch – a crazy/stylish cushion, some beautiful photos or prints, can really make a plain room appeal.

So, I’ve gone looking for places to stand my toothbrush, and hide my many toiletries – and I’ve found hundreds of little and large freestanding units that will accommodate everyone’s bathroom needs! The units even come in different woods or colours to match any style, and fit into any styled bathroom.

We now have a little set of wicker drawers, and a freestanding unit that has cupboards below for all of lotions and potions, and shelves above for the little things.

Every house has walls – but what do you put on them? Do you put bookcases against them? Or sideboards? Or big “light reflecting” mirrors to “enhance the proportions of the room? Or family portraits? Or scenic views?

There’s no hard or fast rule to this, and I like a bit of everything, something different in each room. But when it comes to decorating blank walls (i.e. I’ve got all the furniture sorted, and any more would be over-kill) I like photos. Some colorful, some artistic, but all worth looking at and all personal to me and those under the roof.

There are numerous places online now where you can get your favorite prints blown up and printed onto canvas or framed. I’m currently sorting through all of my pictures to find those worthy of wall space.
